A football term but I will use it as an example to relate to jiu jitsu so bear(sp?) with me. I think most of us have been faced with that moment where we want to give up and think we can go no more..even though we can go alot more and put forth alot more effort. Might be in training, tournament, mma fight, kickboxing match, backyard wrestling ect. It's that moment where you are seemingly exhausted and you start to wonder just how good of shape your opponent is in..your opponent at this point seems faster, better technically, and has more endurance.. this is one of the key turning points in a match/fight and what can seperate the winners from the losers. This is the point where you can begin to lose faith in yourself as an athlete and most of all as a fighter. At the first sign strong resistance or adversity this can begin. Staying in the pocket in grappling can mean to never lose sight of winning, never to have a doubt that you will connect and score...not once not ever.. not even for a second.. you don't back down an inch and you remain in the fight composed and focused waiting for an opportunity to turn things back you direction. If you don't train your mind to do these things you will fall apart in record time at the first sight of fatigue.. "I am not that good" "I cannot beat this dude he is tough" "I am tired..I'll take the easy way out and let him pass my gaurd at this critical moment and try to escape an armbat attempt that's upcoming" I find myself falling into this trap way too much..I am getting lazy and I am planning on turning this around right now..In essence I think I have lost contact with being a fighter or in the general sense of the term fighting. You don't give up, you don't take a step back, you don't let your opponents qualities overwhelm and drown your confidence. Discuss..
